Course Description

Often times clients med lists can be as long as their intake forms! Students will learn to adapt their massage so as not be scared away by the long list of medications on their clients intake form and to feel more confident in their ability to do no harm.

Learning Objectives

1.)Students will recognize medications related to different pathologies.
2.)Students will adapt their massage based on their clients medication list.
3.)Students will identify where to look up medications they don't recognize.
4.)Students will identify safety precautions when working with clients on certain medications.
5.)Students will be able to explain why it is important to know the medications their client is taking.
6.) Students will identify medications where certain massage modalities are contraindicated.
7.) Students will memorize medications based on their use.
8.) Students will be able to identify drug names and tell their use.

Learning Outcomes

1.)Students will demonstrate proficiency in recognizing medications related to different pathologies.

9:00am-9:50am Introductions, participation waivers, why knowing what your client is important (reducing liability, not causing injury, do no harm.)
9:50am-10am Break
10:00am-10:50am Blood pressure medications- recognizing names, what precautions to take, how to adapt massage, quizzing to reinforce learning and memorizing what they are.
10:50am-11:00am Break
11:00am-12pm Cholesterol medications-recognizing names, what precautions to take, how to adapt massage, quizzing to reinforce learning and memorizing what they are.
12pm- 1pm Lunch Break
1:00pm-1:50pm Heart medications (blood thinners, congestive heart failure, blood thinners) recognizing names, what precautions to take, how to adapt massage, quizzing to reinforce learning and memorizing what they are.
1:50pm-2:00pm Break
2:00pm-2:50pm Pain medications & Muscle relaxers- recognizing names, what precautions to take, how to adapt massage, quizzing to reinforce learning and memorizing what they are.
2:50pm-3pm Break
3:00pm-3:50pm Antiseizure/ Antispasmodics- recognizing names, what precautions to take, how to adapt massage, quizzing to reinforce learning and memorizing what they are.
